Turtle Mania

Hey everyone!

For those of you who are curious about my Master’s research project, my friend, Aislinn, made a video describing some of the methods.  This project focuses on turtle nesting sites throughout the Red Sea and how they are likely to change with climate change.  I will make a model of the rising temperatures of sand temperature in the Red Sea. This will help determine the impacts that climate change will have on each nesting site.  Some areas are likely to get hotter faster whereas others will be “climate refugee areas”.  Did you know that the temperature of a sea turtle nest indicates weather the hatchling will be a female or male.  This is known as Temperature Dependent Sex, and is one of the reasons that turtles and other reptiles are especially susceptible to climate change.  There are parts of the world that are already seeing 99% females due to increasing temperatures!

Check out the video here:

How can you help the sea turtles?  Even if you don’t live on or near the sea, there are easy ways that  you can help save the turtles.

  1. Reduce greenhouse emissions that are causing these climatic changes.  This isn’t something that one person can do on their own, so it is crucial that everyone is mindful of their consumption.  The best way to do this is to go vegetarian/vegan to cut down on the methane production.  Methane is ~30 times more potent at heat trapping compared to carbon dioxide, and is produced by cows!  There is a cazy demand for cows and animal agriculture, and this has to change in the future to support life on Earth
  2.  Reduce your plastic use.  Plastic is literally choking the seas, impacting all marine ecosystems from coral reefs to the deepest trenches on Earth.  Humans must cut their addiction to plastic to support a sustainable future.  The first step is to pledge to use a reusable water bottle, utensils, bags, and cut out straws and lids.  It is an easy step in the right direction.
